There’s a calmness that only the ocean can bring. This photo was captured on my 35mm film camera at Ocean Beach, San Francisco, on early morning winter day of a good swell. Tides and Lines freezes a quiet yet powerful moment: a surfer walking out of the sea as two perfect waves break behind him. The foreground is framed by local dune vegetation, soft and out of focus, adding to the nostalgic, dreamlike mood that a black-and-white photo can deliver.
